Human connection is at the core of art and life.

This is a key focus in solo show Interwoven, featuring life-sized figurative oil paintings. Using energetic brushwork, vivid colors, and unfurling layers of painted flesh, these works explore humanity as a living, growing force.

The title Interwoven refers to our complex relationship with our bodies on micro to macro scales. As individuals, we are physically comprised of systems—circulatory, respiratory, muscular, skeletal, etc.—that intermingle in balance to sustain life. On a larger scale, we are biologically woven into our time and place, forever connected to generations of people before us as well as those potentially in the future. Interwoven also describes the painting process, itself, as each brushstroke progressively weaves form into life as the paintings evolve.

Chambers, whose work "celebrates freedom," will include installation art in her offering along with "hero collages." Roe engages her brush to express how sheis impacted by societal and world conditions.

Sukanya Mani, Shilpa Rao and Pratima Murali reach into their south Asian Roots to explore three Asian art forms, Warli, Madhubani and Mandala, fusing ancient techniques with contemporary interpretation of forms, textures, symbols and drawings.

Nicole Cooper explores human connections beneath culture on biological, emotional, and spiritual levels. Her Body in Bloom figurative oil paintings reveal the human body as a changeable, growing force.

What does Serendipity mean to you? I put it to use in my studio every time I create one of my ink wash drawings, which are becoming increasingly popular among collectors of my work.

By nature, the art-making process is at play with the unexpected. I begin with a simple concept or facial expression. My hand guides as black ink spills, seeps, drips and pools across white paper to capture the human form in an abstract emotional space. The finished artwork is a result of chance, meditation, and practice.

If you haven’t seen them yet, take a look at my ink wash gallery here.

You could say it was serendipitous when Art St. Louis announced their next call for art “Serendipity,” a show featuring artworks where unexpected discoveries occur in the process of art making. My work “Drift” was accepted among 44 artworks created by 40 St. Louis regional artists. The show features a variety of styles, techniques and media including basketry, ceramics, drawing, mixed media, paintings, pastel, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, woodworking, and more.

Please join me and other art-lovers for the opening reception to discover… well, discovery!

Work will be available for sale, including my ink wash "Drift." Add "Drift" to your collection.  (Sorry, "Drift" was sold to a happy patron at the opening reception.)

    FULL DETAILS:

Drawing from a live model is a practice artists have kept alive for centuries. The point is to look, see, compose, and create with the human form as a catalyst for discovery. The Figure Observed presents drawings, paintings, and sculpture by the St. Louis Drawing Initiative, a local artist collective. Though each member of the group comes from diverse backgrounds in education as well as life experience, all share one common thread of interest: A passion for studying the human figure.

This interest brought the group together in 2007, when a handful of artists began meeting weekly to hone their drawing skills and connect with like-minded people. Though the group retains only one of these original members, it has transformed over the years as a number of talented artists have come and gone. On view in this show are the resulting observational drawings of current group members.

The strength of the show as a whole is its variety in artistic expression. Though these artists work from the same model during their practice, their examination of the figure and artistic approach vary. This variety is beneficial because it allows each member to play the role of teacher and student at the same time, thus creating an environment for improvement. Not only are the styles different, but skills and ideas change and improve subtly over time.
